Mazowe Mine Blast Kills Two, Spurs Probe into Safety Lapses

Mazowe police have launched a full investigation into a deadly explosion that killed two men at Kwayedza Investments Mine on Friday, 11 July 2025.

The victims had gathered around a fire for warmth when the blast tore through the site.

One man died instantly, the other succumbed to injuries after being admitted to Concession District Hospital, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said.

ZRP national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the incident. “Police in Mazowe are investigating circumstances surrounding a tragic explosion at Kwayedza Investments Mine on July 11, 2025.

“The incident resulted in the deaths of two men who were warming themselves around a fire when the explosion occurred. One victim died on the spot, while the other succumbed to injuries upon arrival at a hospital in Concession. More details will be released in due course,” he said.

The victims’ identities remain undisclosed pending notification of their next of kin.

The blast has triggered alarm among Mazowe’s mining communities, raising urgent questions about safety protocols and oversight at small-scale operations.

Forensic experts are examining debris and blast patterns at the site to determine what may have ignited the explosion.

According to Zimeye, residents fear inadequate safety measures may have contributed to the tragedy and are calling for greater accountability from mine operators.
