Masvingo Man Jailed Four Years for Knife Attack Over Jacket Dispute

MASVINGO – A 27-year-old man from Village 27 in Manyame has been sentenced to four years in prison for stabbing a fellow villager and hitting him with a brick during a violent dispute over a missing jacket.

The incident occurred at Manyame Business Centre on 21 May 2025, around 6am, when the accused, Ephraim Maera, confronted 41-year-old Kudzanai Tarirai Mlambo and accused him of stealing his jacket the previous night.

Before Mlambo could respond, Maera slapped him, prompting the victim to flee.

Around 11am the same day, Mlambo returned to the shopping centre to continue with his errands, but Maera confronted him again.

He punched Mlambo in the face and chased him down when he attempted to escape.

Maera then stabbed him once on the forehead, once on the back of the head, struck him in the mouth with a brick, and delivered two punches before bystanders intervened.

Regional Magistrate Innocent Bepura ruled that Maera’s actions were deliberate and unjustifiable, stating the attack demonstrated a clear intent to inflict harm.

“You deserve a custodial sentence so that a clear message is sent to the community that the court does not tolerate such acts,” said Bepura during sentencing.

According to The Mirror, the State maintained that Maera acted with intent and used excessive force.

Prosecutor Innocent Mudzingwa argued that the severity of the assault warranted a firm custodial penalty and confirmed that Mlambo required medical attention for the injuries sustained.

Maera was handed an effective four-year jail term, with the court denying any option of a fine or suspended sentence due to the seriousness of the offence and its potential impact on public order.
