Masvingo Airport Open For Business — But Only For 50-Passenger Charters

Rumors of Masvingo Airport’s closure have swirled in recent weeks, fueled by the absence of commercial flights and growing public confusion.

But the Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) has now set the record straight: the airport is operational and currently limited to chartered flights with a maximum capacity of 50 passengers.

Speaking during a media briefing held at Masvingo Airport on 24 September 2025, ACZ Public Relations and Communications Manager Tonderai Mangombe dismissed claims that the facility was non-functional.

“The airport is working. It accommodates chartered flights, mostly with capacities of up to 50 passengers. What people should understand is that the absence of commercial flights does not mean the airport is closed,” he said.

Mangombe explained that although scheduled airlines are not yet flying into Masvingo, the airport continues to serve smaller aircraft, particularly for tourism and private travel.

He said ACZ is actively courting investors to expand the facility, with plans already underway to construct a five-star hotel and a modern motel near the terminal to support future international operations.

According to Tell Zim, the expansion blueprint is part of a broader strategy to position Masvingo as a key tourism and investment destination.

The airport’s location offers direct access to iconic sites such as the Great Zimbabwe Monuments, Lake Mutirikwi, and Gonarezhou National Park — all of which have long suffered from limited air connectivity.

“The airport is ready for expansion, and we are calling upon investors to come on board so that we unlock its full potential.

“With proper infrastructure in place, Masvingo has the capacity to be a top tourist destination like Victoria Falls,” Mangombe added.

Tourism stakeholders have repeatedly called for improved air access to the province, arguing that enhanced connectivity would boost visitor numbers and stimulate local development.

ACZ’s renewed commitment to upgrading Masvingo Airport signals a step forward in addressing those concerns and unlocking the region’s full potential.
