Marriage or Beard—Was It a Choice She Had to Make?

INDIA – A marriage in Meerut, India, collapsed after seven months when Arshi left her husband, Mohammad Shakir, over his refusal to shave his beard.
Ignoring family intervention, she eloped with his clean-shaven brother, Mohammad Sabir, throwing both families into turmoil and sparking widespread debate.
Shakir, an Islamic scholar, married Arshi in a family-arranged union, but tensions arose when she insisted he remove his beard.
When he refused, citing religious beliefs, repeated arguments followed.
Initially, her family convinced her to stay, but she later developed a relationship with his younger brother, Sabir.
The two fled together, creating chaos within the household.
Shakir searched for months before filing a missing persons report for both his wife and brother.
According to Daily Pakistan, Arshi’s family disowned her, severing all ties after the scandal.
Meanwhile, Shakir alleges that Arshi is now demanding Rs 5 lakh (US$5,908) from him.
The dramatic incident has fueled discussions on personal freedoms, religious customs, and marital expectations, leaving both families struggling to cope with the unexpected betrayal.
