Marondera municipality’s bicycle License Fee sh0cks Zimboz

Marondera municipality’s bicycle License Fee sh0cks Zimboz – A new policy by Marondera Municipality requiring all cyclists to pay an annual $5 bicycle license fee has triggered widespread anger among Zimbabweans, with many calling it an unfair money grab.

In a statement released on March 11, 2025, and shared on the municipality’s official X page, officials declared that riding an unlicensed bicycle within the municipal jurisdiction is now an offense punishable by fines based on approved budget rates.

“Cyclists and bicycle owners are hereby reminded that it is an offense to cycle an unlicensed bicycle within the municipal jurisdiction of any local authority.”

While the municipality insists the measure is meant to regulate cycling, many Zimbabweans see it as unjustified and exploitative, especially since the town lacks proper cycling infrastructure.

Some residents argue that before implementing such a fee, the municipality should first invest in dedicated bike lanes, secure bicycle parking, and clear signage to ensure cyclist safety.

Others have demanded transparency regarding how the revenue from licensing will be used, questioning whether it will truly benefit cyclists.

Many citizens have taken to social media to express their frustrations, likening the new law to colonial-era regulations.

While authorities argue that bicycle registration will help manage urban traffic, critics see it as yet another financial burden on struggling citizens

@Tatenda Moyo“Next thing, they’ll be making us register our wheelbarrows too”

@Rufaro Dube“Instead of creating jobs, they are busy taxing the poor. What’s next, a walking license”

@Tinashe Mhlanga“If they can’t even fix streetlights, what makes them think they can manage bicycle licenses?”

@Chipo Nkomo“Cyclists already risk their lives on pothole-ridden roads. Now they must pay for it too?”

@Farai Chidziva“How about they start by providing proper bike lanes before demanding money?”

Whether the municipality will reconsider the move remains to be seen.
