Manchester United is leaning towards appointing an interim coach to succeed Ruben Amorim until the end of the season, according to sources from ESPN.
Darren Fletcher, the current boss of the under-18s team, is set to lead the squad in their upcoming match against Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday. He may also remain in charge for the FA Cup third round match against Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The club is actively exploring temporary options that would allow them to buy time in their search for a permanent successor to Amorim, who was dismissed from his position on Monday after a 14-month tenure.
Although the decision is not finalized, there is a consensus that an interim appointment could facilitate a more thorough search for a long-term manager.
The club aims to target candidates with Premier League experience for the permanent role. Potential names include Thomas Tuchel, Oliver Glasner, Mauricio Pochettino, and Andoni Iraola.
Glasner, who led Crystal Palace to FA Cup victory last season, is attractive to United as he is set to be out of contract at Selhurst Park at the season’s end.
Tuchel, currently managing the England team until after the World Cup, was considered for the role at Old Trafford during discussions about sacking Erik ten Hag in summer 2024. The Dutch coach eventually continued until November before Amorim took over.
While Tuchel had a successful stint at Chelsea, culminating in a Champions League victory, he may be hesitant to join United due to past frustrations with the interview process involving Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
