Managers blast blue cards and sin bins

Managers blast blue cards and sin bins. Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has blasted plans to introduce blue cards and sin-bins in football, warning that they will “destroy” the game. The proposals would see 10-minute suspensions for professional fouls and dissent, following the issue of a blue card.

Fifa has clarified that any trials of the system will not be conducted at elite level, while governing body the International Football Association Board (Ifab) will not release details of the sin-bin trial until next month. Despite this, Postecoglou stated that it would be a wrong move.

Postecoglou expressed concern that suspensions could prompt teams to waste time and attract much criticism. Klopp and Eddie Howe, managers of Liverpool and Newcastle United respectively, also criticised the proposals. Postecoglou also criticised officials for failing to enforce existing rules effectively. Klopp was quoted as saying “It doesn’t sound like a fantastic idea in the first moment. But actually, I can’t remember when the last fantastic idea came from these guys [Ifab] – if they ever had one,”.

The Spurs manager also defended his goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. Last weekend, Vicario conceded a goal to Everton’s Dwight McNeil from a corner under pressure from Jack Harrison. Spurs have written to Professional Game Match Officials Limited for clarification as to why such goals have not fallen into the bracket of encroachment.

Postecoglou argued that in the six-yard box, goalkeepers now faced obstruction rather than impeding. In addition, players who push or make contact with opponents in such situations risk penalties under the video assistant referee system. Tottenham have a 0.1% chance of winning this season’s Premier League title, according to analysts Opta. Despite this, Postecoglou said “We’ve got a chance” and would endeavour to take it.
