Man Charged with Murder for Killing Thief

...Who Tried to Steal His Phone

Benson Macharangwanda(22) from Chitungwiza has been charged with murder after an alleged intruder died during a fight at his home on December 2. Macharangwanda appeared in front of a Harare magistrate on Monday and was kept in custody while he waits for a court date.

The National Prosecuting Authority reported that the incident happened around 4:30 AM when Macharangwanda’s phone alarm went off, warning him about an intruder in his room. When he woke up, he saw the deceased trying to steal his phone, which had US$250 in it, through a window.

Macharangwanda chased the intruder and confronted him, demanding his phone back. The situation turned violent when he brought the intruder into his room, leading to a fight. During this struggle, the intruder allegedly pulled out a knife and tried to stab Macharangwanda.

Thanks to his landlady, who shouted a warning, Macharangwanda was able to block the knife. He also managed to get his phone back from the intruder’s shorts. After the fight, the intruder was taken outside but started complaining about his injuries. Relatives took him to Chitungwiza Hospital, but he was declared dead upon arrival.

Macharangwanda is now facing serious murder charges as authorities look into what happened during the incident. This case has raised important questions about self-defense and property protection laws in Zimbabwe.
