Man Arrested for Stabbing His Five Family Members to Death

A 33-year-old man has been arrested for fatally stabbing five family members and injuring two others in the Bethany area of Bergville, KZN, on the night of October 12.

According to KZN police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the suspect and his uncle visited neighbors and, upon returning home, found his mother in the lounge with others. Reports indicate that the suspect grabbed a knife from the couch and attacked his mother, who managed to escape outside.

The violence escalated as he then turned on his uncle, who died in the hallway while attempting to flee to neighbors. Tragically, the suspect also stabbed and killed two young girls, ages two and six, along with a woman with a disability and an elderly visitor.

His mother and a four-year-old girl survived but sustained multiple stab wounds.

Netshiunda noted that the suspect’s sister successfully fled with her one-year-old baby. The exact ages of the other victims are still being confirmed.

Preliminary investigations revealed that multiple domestic violence cases had previously been filed against the suspect, but all were later withdrawn.

Police apprehended the suspect just hours after the incident, following a swift operation led by the station commander. Officers quickly gathered intelligence to locate him.

The suspect is set to appear in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, October 15, facing five counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
