Man Arrested for Allegedly Forcing 4-Year-Old Child to Drink Beer

SOUTH AFRICA- Police have arrested a 33-year-old man on charges of child abuse after a video showed him allegedly forcing a four-year-old boy to drink beer.

The arrest took place on Saturday morning, November 29, following action taken by police and social workers from the Department of Social Development (DSD), who removed four children aged between seven months and 11 years from a home in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain.

Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed the arrest and stated that the man would appear in court on Monday, December 1. Last week, whistleblowers alerted authorities to a video where the boy appeared to be forced to drink Black Label beer and had visible bruises.

A child abuse case was opened for investigation at the Mitchells Plain police station and was referred to the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit.

The DSD reported that the children have been placed with safer caregivers and taken to the Thutuzela Centre for medical examinations. They condemned the incident, emphasizing the serious and lasting effects of alcohol on children’s development.

The DSD urged anyone aware of situations where adults allow children to consume alcohol to report it to local authorities or child protection organizations. With the festive season approaching, they stressed the importance of responsible behavior among adults caring for children. – IOL
