A tragic incident unfolded on Friday evening at Singari Mine, where a security guard accidentally shot and killed a 36-year-old man while clearing a rifle.
According to police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, 21-year-old Anthony Mutafera mistakenly pulled the trigger of a .303 rifle, fatally injuring Innocent Maruku. Mutafera has since been arrested and is cooperating with authorities during the ongoing investigation.
In a separate but equally serious case, police in Murereka arrested 25-year-old Goodwill Love in connection with a murder that occurred on the same day at Fairplay Farm near Risheng Mine, Chikuti.
The victim, Benny Chidiwa, was allegedly assaulted with a shovel and logs by Love and two accomplices, known as Bigboy and Brave. The group is also accused of burning Chidiwa’s feet with firewood after accusing him of stealing a cellphone.
Adding to the grim events of the day, authorities discovered the body of an unidentified man at a church shrine in the Chirasavana area of Dema, Seke.
The body, which had a head wound and was covered with a blanket, was found alongside a blood-stained stone. Police are appealing for information from the public to assist in their investigation.
These incidents highlight ongoing concerns about safety and violence in the region, prompting local authorities to call for greater community awareness and cooperation.
