Malawi’s Former President, Mutharika Wins Election at Age 85

Peter Mutharika, the former president of Malawi, has made a remarkable return to politics by winning the recent elections at the age of 85. He received 57% of the votes, defeating current President Lazarus Chakwera, who garnered 33%.

Chakwera, a pastor turned politician, acknowledged his defeat early, congratulating Mutharika on his “historic win.”

Mutharika previously served as president from 2014 to 2020 but lost to Chakwera in the last election by a significant margin, BBC reports.

Now, Mutharika faces a challenging economic situation. Malawi is experiencing high inflation, with prices soaring, including basic goods like frozen chicken costing about $20 in a country where many live on $2 a day.

The election commission took eight days to announce the results to ensure accuracy and address complaints.

Mutharika’s previous win in 2019 was annulled due to widespread irregularities, but Chakwera won the rerun comfortably.

Chakwera’s concession speech expressed respect for the voters’ choice, despite his concerns about election irregularities.

His statement led to celebrations among Mutharika’s supporters, who filled the streets with singing and dancing.

Many see this election result as a rejection of Chakwera rather than a clear victory for Mutharika. Under Chakwera, issues like corruption, a struggling economy, and high living costs worsened, leading voters to seek change.

Mutharika’s campaign promise of “returning to proven leadership” resonated with the public. However, doubts about his health and stamina persist, as he was less visible during the campaign compared to Chakwera.

The official swearing-in ceremony will occur within 30 days of the election results.
