Machete-Wielding Gang Sentenced to 30 Years for Grisly Mine Murder

MUTARE – The High Court of Zimbabwe has sentenced a gang of ten, including Nyasha Moyana, to 30 years in prison each for the murder of Kudakwashe Mapisa on December 25, 2023.
The harrowing crime occurred at Redwing Mine in Penhalonga, where Mapisa and his colleagues were operating.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the gang, armed with machetes, mattocks and knives, ambushed the victims in the early hours of the morning.
They held Mapisa and his colleagues hostage, depriving them of their ore and other valuables.
The group then forced the victims to carry sacks of ore to the surface.
The court revealed that the gang struck Mapisa fatally on the head with a machete before shoving him into a mine shaft.
His remains were recovered later that same day.
The court emphasized the gravity of the attack, describing it as “cold-blooded and calculated.”
Prosecutors from the National Prosecuting Authority stressed the need for a stern sentence to deter similar acts of violence in mining areas.
This ruling sends a strong message against machete gangs, which have become a menace in Zimbabwe’s mining communities.
