Lungu Funeral Row Deepens: Family Blocks Repatriation Over Hichilema’s Presence
— AP News
Tensions between Zambia’s current and former leadership have flared once again, as the family of late President Edgar Lungu blocked the return of his body from South Africa for a second time—insisting President Hakainde Hichilema stay away from the funeral.
Lungu’s lawyer, Makebi Zulu, said the former leader had made it clear that Hichilema “should not be anywhere near” his burial, citing their bitter rivalry.
Lungu, 68, died on June 5 in a South African hospital and was set to be honored with a state funeral.
His repatriation, initially scheduled for last weekend, was postponed over funeral arrangements and has now been delayed again.
Despite offering condolences, Hichilema’s presence remains a sticking point. Government spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa said authorities remain hopeful for a resolution.
The feud echoes their turbulent political past, from Lungu’s 2016 victory and Hichilema’s brief imprisonment under his rule, to their fiercely contested 2021 election battle. – AP
