Reports indicate that a tire may have blown out while Jota was overtaking on the A-52 road, around 70 miles west of Valladolid. The vehicle lost control, crashed off the road, and burst into flames early yesterday morning.

Jota had recently wed Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children, and had expressed his happiness shortly before the accident. The incident took place in the province of Zamora, a key route for drivers leaving northern Portugal.

According to Daily Mail, emergency services confirmed the crash and the deaths of both men. Calls to the emergency number reported a vehicle accident on the A-52, and responders included traffic police and fire brigades.

Jota’s brother, Andre, was also a footballer, and both were remembered fondly by the Portuguese national team, who expressed their devastation over the loss. Pedro Proenca, head of the Portuguese Football Federation, released a statement honoring both players, noting Jota’s talent and character.

He said in a statement: ‘The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and AndrĂ© Silva, this morning, in Spain.

‘Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 internationalizations for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself.

‘On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and AndrĂ© Silva, as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where, respectively, lined up the players.”

The Federation has requested a minute’s silence before the national team’s match against Spain in the women’s European Championship to honor their memory. The loss of Diogo and Andre represents a significant blow to Portuguese football.
