Lioness Kills Farmer, Drags Body Over 100 Metres in Gujarat’s Gir Forest

INDIA – A – 35-year-old farmer, Manga Bogha Baraiya, was mauled to death by a lioness in Gujarat’s Gir forest on Tuesday.

The incident occurred near Kakidi Moli village in Gir-Somnath district, in the Jasadhar Forest Range of Gir-East Division.

According to forest officials, the lioness attacked Baraiya around 6:45 pm and dragged his body over 100 metres across the forest jurisdictional line into Timbi village of Amreli district.

“The lioness sat on top of the body, refusing to budge, until our team intervened. It took us around three and a half hours to coax the lioness away from the body using bulldozers and a tractor,” said a forest official.

When the lioness returned to the kill, she was tranquilized, captured and taken to the forest department premises for tests and monitoring.

Baraiya’s body has been sent for post-mortem.

Baraiya was survived by his wife, a 10-year-old daughter and two younger sons.

The forest department has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the victim’s family, which will be handed over today.

An accidental death report has been filed at Nageshri police station.
