Legal Battle Over “Jerusalema” Escalates as Master KG Faces Lawsuit

SOUTH AFRICA – The controversy surrounding the global hit Jerusalema has taken a dramatic turn as DJ Charmza, real name Chris Chauke, files a lawsuit against Master KG, Open Mic Productions, and Africori.

The trial, scheduled for 17 November 2025 at the Pretoria High Court, will address Charmza’s claim that he is the original creator of the song.

Charmza’s legal battle dates back to 2020, when he filed court documents alleging copyright infringement against the defendants. The lawsuit centres on his claim that Jerusalema was created during a collaborative studio session with vocalist Nomcebo Zikode.

He alleges that he composed the melody while Nomcebo wrote the lyrics, in a session arranged by Master KG, who was reportedly absent at the time.

Charmza insists that no formal contracts were signed during the song’s creation.

The controversy surrounding Jerusalema has spilled beyond the courtroom and into Charmza’s personal life.

ZiMoja reports that Charmza is currently in hiding following the murder of his brother, Jimmy Chauke, by intruders allegedly seeking him in connection with the case.

Despite these personal challenges, Charmza remains resolute in his pursuit of justice, determined to gain recognition and financial compensation for his role in the song’s creation.

The creation details of Jerusalema, as described by Charmza, are now central to the legal battle.

Court documents reveal that he plans to call witnesses to testify in support of his claims.

Meanwhile, the defendants, including Master KG, Open Mic Productions and  Africori, are finalizing their witness list.

Open Mic co-founder Lionel Jamela has reportedly emphasized the importance of allowing the legal process to uncover the truth.

As the trial approaches, its significance in resolving the authorship dispute continues to gain attention.

TimesLIVE reports that Charmza is seeking damages amounting to over R100 million.
