Kwaito Legend Mapaputsi Passes Away

Mzanzi’s music community is mourning the loss of kwaito legend Sandile “Mapaputsi” Ngwenya, who died on Thursday, September 5th. The 48-year-old, famous for his hit *Izinja*, passed away in hospital after a brief illness.

In a statement, the Ngwenya family confirmed his death, expressing their sorrow and requesting privacy as they plan his funeral. More details will be shared soon.

Mapaputsi, a trailblazer in kwaito, earned widespread fame with his 2001 album *Izinja*, which won two Metro FM Awards for Best Kwaito Artist and Song in 2002.

Fans and musicians flooded social media with tributes. One fan tweeted: “RIP Mapaputsi – you’ve always been my South African GOAT.” Another wrote: “RIP Mapaputsi, 2024 snatched another one.” His legacy will live on through his music.
