Kuda Tagwirei’s SDA Church Pledge Ignites Discussion in Mutoko

MUTOKO – Business tycoon and philanthropist Kuda Tagwirei has pledged to construct a large Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) church in Mutoko, with construction expected to begin in the coming days.

The announcement was made yesterday, during a church gathering.

A video of the event was posted by @CMukungunugwa on X, where Tagwirei confidently assured congregants that work would commence soon.

Tagwirei, an elder in the SDA Church, emphasized his commitment to the initiative, stating, “Izvozvi vhiki rino richitanga maybe rinotevera racho iro tinoda kuvaka chechi inotyisa pano,” indicating that construction could begin as soon as this week or next.

His involvement in religious and social projects has reignited discussions on the role of philanthropy in community development.

Beyond the church construction, Tagwirei’s Bridging Gaps Foundation (BGF) has been actively supporting Mutoko through multiple community initiatives.

On February 16, 2025, his foundation installed boreholes and a 6.2KV solar system at Kushinga Clinic, Kushinga Primary School and Kushinga Secondary School, giving residents consistent access to clean water and reliable electricity.

A two-day medical outreach program followed, with health personnel from Arundel Hospital assisting nearly 500 people through a mobile clinic.

The outreach took place on February 16, 2025, followed by additional aid on February 17, 2025, where 1,500 households in Ward 26 of Mutoko received donated supplies, including 15 tonnes of maize meal, 3,000 liters of cooking oil, sugar, salt and sugar beans.

While some have praised Tagwirei’s generosity, others remain skeptical about the motives behind the pledge and its overall impact.

Concerns regarding his wealth and past allegations of corruption have resurfaced, alongside debates on whether alternative investments, such as factories or schools, would be more beneficial.

Users on X expressed varied opinions:

@reallobengula: “Giving peanuts to the people you disadvantaged gives mbingas a thrill. But anyway, churches are good.”

@Msingatyiwi: “Uplifting communities by building a church 😅 Why not build a factory so people in those areas get employment?”

@ManjengwaT78296: “Hamuvhundukewo here nekugadzira environment inongoita kuti uvewega wega or vashoma vanokwanisa. That alone isn’t it a sign that something is wrong in our midst? Does it also mean that our people are daft vanoda spoon feeding.”

@MarkN38935: “Why not a school?”
