Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said officers patrolling the area spotted the Polo driving suspiciously through side streets. When the suspects noticed the police, they sped off, triggering a high-speed pursuit.
The chase reached a climax at a traffic circle on Mavuso Street, where the driver lost control and crashed. As the suspects scrambled out of the car, they opened fire on the police. Officers arrested two men: one with a firearm and the driver, who was trapped inside the wrecked car.
While securing the scene, police heard noises coming from the boot. To their surprise, a man emerged, revealing he had been hijacked and locked inside. He had managed to crawl through the back seats to escape.
The suspects now face charges of hijacking, kidnapping, and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. Both are expected to appear in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court.
