Karoi driver jailed 18-months for fatal crash
KAROI – A Karoi man has been sentenced to 18 years in jail for causing an accident that resulted in one person’s death along the Siakobvu-Chalala road on August 10, 2024.
Fraction Gunuka was not asked to plead to charges of culpable homicide and driving without a valid licence when he appeared before the Karoi Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
It is the State’s case that on the 10th of August 2024, the accused person was driving a white Isuzu with 18 passengers on board along Siakobvu-Chalala road when he lost control of the vehicle and veered off the right side of the road.
The court heard that the vehicle overturned and landed on its roof, resulting in one passenger dying on the spot and others sustaining injuries.
Investigations revealed that the accused person did not hold a valid driving licence.
The accused person was convicted and sentenced to 24 months imprisonment for Count 1 with 6 months suspended, resulting in an effective sentence of 18 months.
Additionally, he was sentenced to a fine of USD$100 for Count 2 or 30 days imprisonment in default.
