Kariba Housemaid Injured In Accidental Firearm Discharge
KARIBA – A 32-year-old housemaid suffered a gunshot wound on Wednesday after a firearm accidentally discharged while she was preparing her employer’s bed at Stand Number 626, Baobab Lodge in Kariba.
The firearm, reported to belong to the employer, 57-year-old Charlene Geddes, fell from the bed and fired a shot that struck the maid’s lower left leg.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Mashonaland West provincial spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, confirmed the incident.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police in Kariba is investigating circumstances surrounding an incident in which a female adult aged 32 years was accidentally shot on her lower limb of the left leg and sustained a gunshot wound.”
Inspector Kohwera explained the circumstances, adding, “The victim was performing household chores when a firearm fell from a bed, discharging a round that injured her leg.”
Following the incident, the victim was immediately rushed to a nearby medical centre for treatment.
Police emphasized the importance of firearm safety to prevent such accidents.
“We encourage all firearm holders to ensure that their weapons are securely stored in fixed gun cabinets and to adhere to regulations under the Firearm’s Act, including notifying authorities of address changes.”
Investigations are still underway, with authorities urging firearm owners to take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of those around them.
