Kandege Claims Another Life: 20-Year-Old Takes Own Life in DZ

A 20-year-old man reportedly took his own life after losing US$800 in a gambling game known locally as Kandege.

Ashley Patrick Magarira allegedly lost the money, intended for his brother’s school fees, while playing the online gambling game Aviator.

Neighbours in the community expressed shock and called for urgent action to address gambling among youths.

“We are deeply concerned as a community when our children are choosing death because of the allure of quick money,” one resident said.

“This gambling addiction is robbing our youths of their future.

“We need to come together to combat this menace and safeguard our children, our future, our heritage.”

Ashley’s body was taken to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Local authorities have urged parents and guardians to monitor their children’s online activities and to seek help for those showing signs of gambling addiction.

Gambling experts warn that online games like Aviator can be highly addictive, often targeting young people with promises of quick cash.

“It only takes one big loss for some to spiral into despair,” said a local counsellor.

“Awareness and early intervention are key.”
