Jacob Ngarivhume Released on Bail After 82 Days

Jacob Ngarivhume, leader of the opposition party Transform Zimbabwe, has been granted bail by the Harare High Court after spending 82 days in pre-trial detention. The ruling came on Wednesday, with Justice Emilia Muchawa setting the bail amount at US$100.

As part of the bail conditions, Ngarivhume must surrender his passport and is prohibited from posting on the social media platform X.

Ngarivhume’s arrest took place on August 2, just ahead of the SADC heads of state summit scheduled for August 17 in Harare. The government expressed concerns about potential protests from pro-democracy activists during the summit.

Reports from rights lawyers indicate that more than 100 activists have been detained across the country, with many still awaiting trial.

The Transform Zimbabwe leader faces charges of disorderly conduct in a public space and participation in an illegal gathering aimed at promoting public violence, offenses he allegedly committed in June.
