An infant’s body was discovered in a sewer manhole in Zengeza 5 (Ward 6) on Friday (28/11/2025), prompting an urgent investigation by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and renewed warnings from Chitungwiza Municipality about unsafe waste disposal.
The discovery was made during a routine sewer deblocking exercise near Mutowe and Msasa by municipal sewer maintenance workers.
In a notice, the municipality said the Mayor, Councillor Rosaria Mangoma, together with Deputy Mayor Councillor Eddmore Muringa and Acting Town Clerk Japson Nemuseso, visited the scene to assess the situation.
“This is a heartbreaking incident, and our thoughts are with the family affected,” read the statement.

“The matter has been handed over to the police, and we urge residents to allow the authorities to conduct a full investigation.”
The municipality confirmed that the matter has since been handed over to the Zimbabwe Republic Police for full investigations.
“…we extend our deepest condolences over this heartbreaking incident,” the statement reads.
The council used the incident to caution residents against disposing of inappropriate items into the sewer system.
“Items such as sand, diapers, spoons, and other foreign objects cause serious blockages and disrupt sewer operations. We urge the community to cooperate,” the notice said.
Chitungwiza Municipality emphasized that sewer maintenance works would continue as part of ongoing efforts to address blockages affecting the community.
The council is also committed to improving sewer infrastructure, including the ongoing replacement of aging pipes on the Zengeza and Pagomba Outfall lines.
