‘Holy’ Splurge: Chivayo Gifts Archbishop Guti $250K and SUV

Flamboyant businessman Wicknell Chivayo has once again stirred public debate after announcing a lavish gift of a brand-new 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser VXR and US$250,000 in cash to Archbishop Dr. Eunor Guti—widow of the late ZAOGA Forward in Faith founder, Archbishop Ezekiel Guti.

“Ordinarily, I would say please go and see Farai,” Chivayo said in his now-viral tribute posted on his Facebook page.

“But Farai from Faramatsi Motors will come to you and deliver your 2025 brand new Toyota Land Cruiser… fully paid for… plus $250,000 in cash for fuel and your personal use.” He added that the gift was subject to approval by the church’s governing board.

Chivayo’s statement, couched in a glowing eulogy honouring the late Archbishop Ezekiel Guti on what would have been his 101st birthday, praised the spiritual giant for his “unmatched service” and loyalty to both God and Zimbabwe.

But the opulent donation has sparked criticism online, with critics questioning Chivayo’s priorities amid the country’s deepening economic and social crises.

Critics argue that while religious leaders are being showered with extravagant gifts, ordinary citizens are dying in understaffed hospitals where “bring your own syringe” has become the norm.

Archbishop Eunor now joins a growing list of public figures and clergy recently flouted with expensive gifts by Chivayo, including musicians and church leaders.

The businessman, who has described his philanthropy as a show of gratitude and divine favour, remains a controversial figure, frequently drawing both admiration and outrage.

“People don’t understand divine favour. You don’t need to justify blessings just embrace them,” Chivayo once said in response to public backlash over his spending sprees.

This is not the first time Wicknell Chivayo has made headlines for donating cars and large sums of money to church leaders.

His recent spree has included top-of-the-range vehicles for various pastors and bishops across denominations who include Pastor Ian Ndlovu and his wife as well as Madzibaba Israel and Madzibaba Lawrence Katsiru of the Johanne Masowe YeChishanu Apostolic Sect.
