HIT Unveils Lithium Project To Anchor Zimbabwe In Global Energy Storage Chain

The Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) has announced plans to establish a lithium processing plant, a strategic move aimed at positioning Zimbabwe as a key player in the global battery manufacturing and green energy value chain.

The announcement was made on Friday by HIT Vice Chancellor Dr Engineer Quinton Kanhukamwe during the launch of Dr Washington Mbizvo’s book on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Harare.

Dr Kanhukamwe said the initiative would unlock significant opportunities for value addition and industrialisation, aligning with Zimbabwe’s broader beneficiation agenda.

“This initiative will unlock vast opportunities for value addition and industrialisation.

“It will not only strengthen Zimbabwe’s beneficiation agenda, but also anchor the country’s participation in the fast-growing green energy economy,” he stated.

He described lithium as “the oil of the future,” underscoring its importance in the global shift toward renewable energy.

“Lithium is the oil of the future, and Zimbabwe must be at the centre of that future.

“This plant at HIT is a step towards making our nation a global hub for energy storage technologies,” he emphasized.

According to The Herald, the lithium plant will serve as a cornerstone in Zimbabwe’s efforts to industrialise and participate meaningfully in the international battery value chain.

The project is expected to leverage the country’s abundant mineral resources to drive technological innovation and economic growth.

In a separate tribute, Dr Kanhukamwe congratulated Dr Mbizvo on his newly launched book, describing him as a “trailblazer” in the education sector.

He commended the publication as “a beacon of scholarly excellence” and “a policy and institutional blueprint” that will guide policymakers and institutional leaders in advancing skills development.

The book is aligned with Zimbabwe’s national development vision and is expected to influence future strategies in technical education and workforce empowerment.
