High Court Grants Bail to Three Human Rights Activists
Three human rights activists, Namatai Kwekweza, Robson Chere, and Samuel Gwenzi, have been granted bail of US$150 each by the High Court after spending over a month in remand prison.
The activists, who were arrested in the lead-up to the 44th Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government, were represented by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.
The High Court ruled that the lower court’s decision to deny bail was not sufficiently justified. As part of their bail conditions, the activists must report to the nearest police station on the last Friday of each month.
Kwekweza, Chere, and Gwenzi were accused of participating in a protest outside the Harare magistrates’ court in support of 78 members of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change, who were arrested for unlawful gathering.
