VIDEO: Here is What ‘Chigananda’ Means According to Zanu PF’s Machacha

Here is What ‘Chigananda’ Means According to Zanu PF’s Machacha – The term “chigananda” has been the subject of public speculation since Vice President Constantino Chiwenga uttered it during the burial of former Deputy Chief Secretary Justin Mupamhanga in January.

Many took it to mean people who amass wealth through dubious methods.

But Zanu PF’s National Political Commissar, Munyaradzi Machacha, says that interpretation couldn’t be further from the truth.

Addressing a provincial coordinating committee at Masvingo Polytechnic on Sunday, April 6, Machacha unpacked the meaning of “chigananda” in detail.

Far from being a symbol of ill-gotten wealth, he said the word actually describes a legitimate capitalist — a person who owns capital, creates goods or services, and earns profit through enterprise.

“In English, they call it ‘bourgeoisie,’” Machacha explained. “Anyone who owns money, land, or machinery and can produce more than they consume for profit — that’s a capitalist. In Shona, that’s what we call chigananda.”

The crowd responded with applause, welcoming the clarification that flips the narrative associated with the controversial term.

Machacha used the moment to highlight how Zanu PF had, over the years, shifted from a strict communist approach to championing black empowerment.

He pointed to the 1987 Unity Accord between Zanu and Zapu as the beginning of this ideological transformation.

“At that congress, we moved away from the communist line. We said we must empower our people to claim their ancestral inheritance and build wealth,” he said.

He then credited the party’s policies for producing some of Zimbabwe’s most successful entrepreneurs. “People like Strive Masiyiwa, Kuda Tagwirei — and yes, even Wicknell Chivayo — are products of our empowerment policies. We opened the gates for them to succeed,” he stated.
