Harare men sentenced to 210 hours of community service for selling 2kg of mislabelled brown sugar

HARARE – Two Harare men have been sentenced to 210 hours of community service and fined $100 for selling counterfeit 2kg “Star Brands” brown sugar packages in a scam that deceived dozens of consumers.

Ernest Gwetsai (30) of GlenView 1 and Forget Dzapasi of Glen Norah A, recently appeared in Harare Magistrate’s Court facing two counts related to selling underweight sugar.

According to State papers,Gwetsai and Dzapasi have been convicted of selling falsely labelled “Star Brands” 2kg brown sugar packages, weighing between 1.243kg and 1.33kg- significantly less than advertised.

Additionally, the duo were found guilty of selling goods without invoices.

The court heard that police detectives discovered the scam in June, 2024 when they bought a case of counterfeit sugar from KKK Shop situated at Target Building Corner Bute and Ruzende Street, Harare.

Further investigation revealed that the accused were the suppliers of the counterfeit sugar and had failed to provide documentation for a second shipment delivered to KKK Shop.
