Gweru Woman Sentenced to 7 Years for Poisoning Baby’s Milk – A 221-year-old, Gweru woman, Felistas Mpofu has been sentenced to seven years in prison for poisoning and k!lling her 7-month-old baby girl.
The heartbreaking events began on March 2, 2023, when Felistas, then 19, left her rural home in Shumba village, Mberengwa, and arrived in Mandava, Zvishavane.
Homeless and desperate, she sought help from a Good Samaritan, who kindly offered her a place to sleep.
Unbeknownst to the host, Felistas had already committed a horrifying act earlier that morning—she had laced her baby’s milk with rat poison and fed it to the child.

“The baby cried all night,” the Good Samaritan later told investigators.
“I suggested taking her to the hospital the next morning because something didn’t seem right.”
The child was rushed to Zvishavane General Hospital, where she sadly d!ed.
At first, the incident was treated as a case of sudden d£ath, pending investigations. However, suspicion was aroused when Felistas returned to collect her belongings.
The Good Samaritan noticed a strong chemical smell coming from the baby’s feeding bottle, which she promptly handed over to the police.
A post-mortem carried out at United Bulawayo Hospitals confirmed the infant had ingested a deadly toxic substance.
During her trial, Felistas admitted to deliberately poisoning her baby, telling the court: “I had no means to look after her properly. I was overwhelmed and alone.”
Though the court took note of her age, lack of a prior criminal record, and the desperate situation she was in, Justice felt a custodial sentence was necessary.
