Gweru Mourns Business Icon Lazarus T. Chikadaya

Gweru is mourning the sudden death of Lazarus T. Chikadaya, a prominent entrepreneur and philanthropist, who died peacefully in Harare yesterday.

Chikadaya, the founder and managing director of Drawlink Civil Engineering, had a profound impact on Zimbabwe’s business and infrastructure sectors.

He died a day after undergoing surgery, though details about his condition remain unclear. His passing has sparked an outpouring of grief from colleagues, business leaders and the wider community.

Although the specifics surrounding his death are still emerging, his influence across business and philanthropy remains undeniable.

Chikadaya was widely regarded as a generous “mbinga” who dedicated himself to fostering economic growth, particularly in the Midlands province.

He spearheaded road rehabilitation projects and established a US$500,000 asphalt-making plant in Gweru, capable of producing 100 tonnes of asphalt per day, strengthening Zimbabwe’s infrastructure development efforts.

Chikadaya was also closely involved with Chapungu United Football Club, engaging in coaching appointments and supporting local sports development.

His larger-than-life personality, unmistakable laugh, and deep patriotism endeared him to many.
