Gweru Man Dies After Drinking Too Much Masese, Police Suspect Overdose
GWERU – Police in Gweru have launched an investigation into the death of a 78-year-old man who died shortly after consuming a large quantity of masese, a traditional opaque beer, at a local bar.
The incident occurred on 8 September, and authorities suspect that excessive drinking may have led to alcohol poisoning.
The deceased, Sekuru Sattulus Ncube, reportedly walked about two kilometres from his home to Mboma Bar in Mtapa suburb.
He was accompanied by his 40-year-old son, who bought him masese and gave him US$30.
The two spent time drinking at the bar until late evening, and Ncube was later seen struggling to walk along the roadside.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the details, stating,
“Around 2000 hours, his son went to the bar and bought him traditional beer. By 2200 hours, the elderly man was seen intoxicated and struggling to walk by the roadside.”
Later that night, Ncube’s body was discovered near a stairway leading to upstairs flats in Section 7, Mtapa.
Gweru police officers who attended the scene observed foam coming from his mouth and nostrils, raising concerns about possible alcohol poisoning.
“We are still conducting investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death,” added Insp Mahoko.
Ncube had no visible injuries at the time of discovery.
While foul play has not been confirmed, police are awaiting post-mortem results to determine the exact cause of death.
