Guardiola Threatens to Quit if Manchester City Squad Grows Too Large

Pep Guardiola has stated that he would resign as manager of Manchester City if the squad size increases next season. He expressed concern about not wanting to leave many healthy players out of the game.

As the club prepares for summer changes, several senior players may leave following Kevin De Bruyne’s last home game for City, which ended in a 3-1 victory against Bournemouth.

This season, injuries have plagued the team, making it challenging to balance the squad. Some players, including Abdukodir Khusanov, Savinho, James McAtee, Claudio Echeverri, and Rico Lewis, were not included in the 20-player matchday squad.

Guardiola, who prefers a smaller team, emphasized the importance of having fewer players. “I told the club I don’t want a bigger squad,” he said. “I cannot bear leaving five or six players on the sidelines. If that happens, I will quit. I want a shorter squad to stay.”

He added that it is difficult for him to tell players they cannot play, and he wants to avoid this situation next season. As reported by Sky News, despite facing injury challenges, including the absence of Rodri until recently, Guardiola is open to using academy players to fill gaps if needed.

“We can’t lose the connection within the team,” he said.

“We need to keep the squad tight and focused.” This means City will need to reduce player numbers before making new signings in the upcoming transfer window.
