Govt, Vendors Deadlocked as Calls Grow for Crisis Talks to Avert Uprising

The government is under pressure to convene an emergency meeting with local authorities, police, and informal traders to prevent violent clashes as authorities attempt to clear defiant vendors from the streets.

This comes a week after Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe ordered local authorities to remove informal traders especially night traders citing health hazards.

However, the directive has sparked resistance, with municipal police facing off against angry vendors in several cities.

Some confrontations have turned violent, as traders retaliated against law enforcement officers.

Despite the crackdown, vendors remain in undesignated areas, and tensions are rising.

According to NewsDay, there are growing fears within government circles that the situation could spiral into a full-blown uprising if the situation persists.

City of Harare councillor and chairperson of the committee on small and medium enterprises (SMEs), Denford Ngadziore, warned that without urgent intervention, the violence could escalate.

“The government and local authorities should urgently meet for a multi-stakeholder dialogue to find a fair, swift, and peaceful transition that prevents further chaos,” Ngadziore said.

He also questioned the practicality of enforcing the policy daily, citing the substantial funding required and the failure of previous eviction attempts. Instead, he urged authorities to focus on sustainable solutions.

As it stands, Harare is currently working on implementing its SMEs policy to regulate vendors, but with tensions high, authorities will need more than just policy changes to resolve the crisis.
