Govt Launches “One Pupil, One Tablet; One Student, One Laptop” Initiative for Next Year
The Zimbabwean Government has announced the “One Pupil, One Tablet; One Student, One Laptop” initiative, set to begin next year. This program aims to improve technology-based education in all primary and secondary schools across the country.
Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Honourable Torerayi Moyo, shared this information during a visit to Hippo Valley Estates Primary School in Chiredzi on Monday.
Honourable Moyo emphasized the importance of internet access, noting that over 15,000 internet connectivity kits have been procured, with 9,000 designated for distribution to schools nationwide.
“Our aim is for every student to have a digital tool. We will provide laptops to all students, and we have secured the largest budget for the 2026 financial year. We will also procure tablets and iPads for schools. Through the Presidential solarisation scheme, rural schools will receive solar kits to ensure no one and no place is left behind,” he explained.
Moyo highlighted improvements in exam pass rates due to recent investments in education, particularly for girls, ZBC reports. In the 2025 Grade 7 examinations, girls achieved a 53% pass rate compared to 43% for boys.
A parent noted, “Our children will be better prepared for the digital world, which is where education is heading. The use of ICT tools has also led to improved results in 2025 Grade 7 exams.”
A guardian added, “Learning with computers offers many benefits, especially as technology becomes essential in today’s world.”
“This program aligns with the national development plan, ensuring every child accesses new technology,” commented a community member.
Ms. Julia Madzudzo, head of Hippo Valley Estates Primary School, mentioned, “We are working closely with the Ministry on digital transformation in our teaching across all subjects.”
The initiative comes as Hippo Valley Estates Primary School achieved a 100% pass rate in the 2025 Grade 7 examinations. Students praised the school’s support, highlighting the benefits of the computer lab and interactive boards for research and learning.
