
Drunk drivers have been put on notice as the government hands police new evidential breathalyzers to strengthen the crackdown on alcohol-impaired driving ahead of the festive season.
This comes as the country has so far recorded 2,936 crashes during the last festive season, including 133 fatal accidents that claimed 155 lives.
Authorities say human error particularly drunk driving is responsible for 94 percent of all crashes.
Handing over the equipment to the Zimbabwe Republic Police yesterday, Transport Minister Felix Mhona warning that the technology will tighten the noose on motorists who gamble with alcohol and public safety.
“In addition to the commission of vehicles and brake roller testers, this event is crucial as we shall also hand over evidential breathalyzers to the Zimbabwe Republic Police,” Minister Mhona said.

“The breathalyzers were procured by the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe for use by ZRP.”
He said the gadgets arrive at a decisive moment.
“The generous donation of breathalyzers by the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe represents a critical intervention in our mission to reduce road carnage,” he said.
“The equipment will dramatically enhance the operational capacity of our police service.”
With the new breathalyzers now deployed, police will be stopping vehicles, testing drivers, and pulling offenders off the road without delay.
