Gardener Sentenced to 12 Months for Kidnapping 8-Year-Old in Headlands

Ernest Kapfurutsa, a 25-year-old gardener from Plot 40, Wensleydale, was sentenced to 12 months in prison by the Rusape Magistrates’ Court after being convicted of kidnapping a minor.
The incident took place on October 11, 2025, around 4:00 PM, in Village 2, Nyamukamani, Chiendambuya. Kapfurutsa attempted to abduct an 8-year-old boy who was walking home with a friend. Witnesses reported that Kapfurutsa initially tried to grab one child’s hand but ultimately succeeded in seizing the complainant’s arm. He began dragging the boy towards the Nyagadzi River, intending to deprive him of his freedom.
In a courageous act, the young victim shouted for help from a woman working in her garden nearby. Aware of the urgency, she rushed to the scene, prompting Kapfurutsa to abandon his attempt and flee.
The incident was quickly reported to local police, who arrested Kapfurutsa shortly thereafter. His conviction serves as a stark reminder of the need for community vigilance in protecting children. Authorities are encouraging parents and guardians to educate children about the dangers of walking alone and to seek assistance from trusted adults if approached by strangers.
