Former VP Phelekezela Mphoko to Be Buried in Bulawayo

...Not at National Heroes Acre

The family of former Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko has announced that he will be buried in Bulawayo, following his wish before he passed away last Friday.

Mphoko, 84, died from a pulmonary embolism while receiving medical treatment in India. He was with his wife Laurinda, two daughters, and his grandson Daluthando at the time of his death.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared Mphoko a national hero, recognizing his contributions to Zimbabwe. His body is set to arrive at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport today at 5 PM, with plans to leave for Bulawayo tomorrow at 9 AM.

His daughter, Siduduzo, shared the news on Facebook, saying, “On behalf of the family, I can confirm that my father’s wish has been granted. He will be laid to rest at his home in Bulawayo. I will share funeral details soon.” It has also been revealed that Mphoko wanted to be buried at his plot in Douglasdale.

Family spokesperson Ndaba Mphoko stated that his brother will be buried at his plot, but he could not give exact details about transporting the body. He confirmed that Mphoko’s wishes have been communicated to the government.

Mphoko is among several Zapu leaders who chose not to be buried at the National Heroes Acre. This includes Dumiso Dabengwa, who was buried at his home in Ntabazinduna in May 2019. Former President Robert Mugabe also opted for burial at his rural home in Zvimba after his removal in 2017.

Mphoko is survived by his wife, two daughters, one son, and three grandchildren. Mourners are currently gathering at the family home in Douglasdale to pay their respects.
