Football Fraternity Mourns Brian Banda at Emotional Send-Off

Lady Stanley Cemetery was a sea of tears, jerseys, and broken hearts as Zimbabwean football said goodbye to one of its brightest stars, Brian Banda, who tragically passed away at just 29.

The sombre afternoon in Bulawayo drew a crowd of mourners that read like a who’s who of Zimbabwean football—club officials, legends, teammates, fans, and administrators, all united by grief and reverence for a man who left everything on the pitch and inspired countless lives off it.

From former players to current league administrators, the message was the same: Zimbabwe has lost more than a footballer—it has lost a national treasure.

ZIFA President Nqobile Magwizi struggled to hold back emotion as he delivered a heartfelt tribute.

“No words, no tribute or speech is enough to take away the pain we are feeling right now,” he said.

“Brian was more than just a player. He represented Zimbabwe with pride, and that tells you everything you need to know about the quality of the man. As ZIFA, we will honour his memory, not just with words, but with action.”

He went on to offer condolences to Banda’s young family, urging them to seek strength in faith during this painful time.

Premier Soccer League Acting CEO Rodwell Thabe confirmed that all Matchday 19 games will observe a moment of silence in Banda’s honour.

“His death has left a huge void in the league,” Thabe said.

“But his legacy will live on. His sportsmanship was top notch—he was the kind of player who brought the game to life.”

Former Dynamos midfield enforcer Desmond Maringwa delivered one of the more personal tributes.

“He reminded me of myself as I tormented Highlanders at Barbourfields back in my days,” said Maringwa with a faint smile.

“It’s been an emotional week for the football fraternity. We’re still grieving Norman Maroto, and now BB is gone too.”

Maringwa closed his tribute by addressing FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza:

“Coach Mapeza, I know the coming days and weeks will be tough. But keep going. Play for Brian Banda.”

As Brian Banda was lowered into the ground, the silence was punctuated only by muffled sobs and the haunting echo of his name being sung by fans one last time.

Gone too soon, but never forgotten—Brian Banda’s boots may no longer grace the pitch, but his legacy will echo through Zimbabwean football for generations.-Bhora Afrika
