FLASH FLOOD TRAGEDY: Chipinge Dam Collapse Claims Life, Leaves One Missing

CHIPINGE – A devastating flash flood swept through Chipinge after a 20m section of the Dondone Dam wall collapsed, claiming the life of a four-year-old girl and leaving her eight-year-old sister missing.

Acting Manicaland Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident that happened yesterday around 1pm.

“The wall collapse was catastrophic. A 20-meter section of the dam’s wall gave way, releasing a large amount of water downstream.”

According to Assistant Inspector Chinyoka, Perseverance Sithole, a resident of Manyaya Village under Chief Mutema, was washing clothes with her children, Agnes Muchadei (4) and Grace Mlambo(8) near the riverbank when the floodwaters engulfed them.

Sithole survived by clinging to a tree and alerted other villagers to the incident. Tragically, Agnes’ body was found 3km downstream, while Grace remains missing.

Rescue teams, including local emergency services and volunteers, are searching for Grace, focusing on the downstream areas of the Dondone River.

The Dondone Dam, located along the Dondone River, is a crucial water source for the local community.
