First Lady Commits to Educating Brave Teen Who Delivered Baby Alone in Macheke

The First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, has pledged to fund the education of 14-year-old Chiedza Mushunje — the courageous girl from Macheke who stunned her community by delivering a baby alone after adults, including her own mother, fled in fear.
The pledge is conditional on Chiedza passing her Grade 7 examinations, which she recently completed.
Her bravery, inspired by the First Lady’s radio and television programmes, has earned her national recognition and a promise that could shape her future.
The dramatic incident unfolded at Mhiripiri Shopping Centre under Chief Makoni in Macheke, where Chiedza remained calm and determined while others panicked.
Drawing from family health education sessions and community discussions, she bravely assisted in delivering her neighbour’s baby.
Only after hearing the newborn’s cry did community members return, astonished by the young girl’s bravery.
According to The Herald, what began as a frightening moment, with adults fleeing in fear — quickly turned into a story of hope, courage, and national admiration after Chiedza successfully delivered the baby.
Reflecting on the moment during her meeting with the First Lady, Chiedza said she felt proud and joyful.
Chiedza, who recently completed her Grade Seven examinations at Tashinga Primary School, said she had long dreamed of meeting the First Lady.
That wish came true when she and her mother, Ms Tecla Mushumbi, were warmly welcomed at Dr Mnangagwa’s offices in Harare.
“I decided to meet you, Chiedza, since you mentioned my name and expressed a desire to see me.
“I want to thank you for the courage you demonstrated — courage that even some of the elders, including your own mother, could not gather,” said Dr Mnangagwa.
During the meeting, the First Lady — affectionately known as Mother Zimbabwe, reaffirmed her commitment to supporting girls who show leadership and empathy.
“As you await your Grade 7 results, we remain hopeful that you will pass with flying colours.
“Should you perform well, I will support your academic journey so that you can pursue your preferred career in nursing,” she added.
Chiedza expressed her joy and gratitude.
“My long-held wish to meet the First Lady has finally come true.
“I used to only see her on television or hear her speaking on the radio. I am truly happy to have met her in person.
“I am also grateful for the gifts I received, including groceries and clothes,” she said.
She added, “I am especially delighted that the First Lady promised to support my academic journey if I pass my Grade 7 exams.
“My dream is to pursue a career in nursing.”
Her mother, visibly emotional, said the experience had turned a terrifying moment into a blessing.
“In some cases, children may get you into trouble as a parent because of their actions, but for me, Chiedza has brought something truly good,” she said
