Firefighters Help Woman to Deliver Her Baby

SOUTH AFRICA- Two firefighters from the Mfuleni fire station helped a woman give birth on Sunday, December 1. The expectant mother came to the fire station in labor.

Firefighters Joswin Lameyer and Khuselo Blaai were on duty and quickly assisted her while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

Jean-Pierre Smith, the MMC for Safety and Security, praised their actions. “They acted fast and called for help from the Macassar Fire Station, but the baby wasn’t waiting. With instructions from an Ambulance Emergency Assistant on the phone, the firefighters helped the mom deliver her baby. A few minutes later, a healthy baby boy was born, and Lameyer and Blaai clamped and cut the umbilical cord,” Smith said.

The mother and her baby were then taken to the Site C Community Health Centre in Khayelitsha.

Smith congratulated the family and thanked the firefighters for their quick thinking in bringing the baby into the world, calling it a great story to start the festive season.
