Fear Grips Manicaland as Stray Buffaloes Attack, Lion Roams Villages

Fear has gripped villagers in Mutare and Buhera districts after stray buffaloes injured six people, including a school child, while a lion was spotted killing livestock.
The increasing human-wildlife conflict has raised safety concerns, prompting urgent calls for intervention.
In separate incidents, three villagers were attacked near Dune Primary School in Buhera South’s Ward 28, while another three, including a school child were injured in Mutsago under Chief Marange.
The buffaloes are believed to have strayed from Save Valley Conservancy through a damaged fence that has remained unrepaired for nearly a decade.
Some farmers have been accused of using the breach to graze their cattle inside the conservancy, worsening the situation.
Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) spokesperson, Mr. Tinashe Farawo, confirmed both the buffalo attacks and the lion sighting in Mutsago.
He assured residents that rangers are on the ground tracking the animals and urged caution.
“We advise residents not to hunt the buffaloes. Our team is on the ground working professionally to resolve the situation. People must also avoid walking at night in affected areas to reduce risk,” said Mr. Farawo.
The Manica Post previously reported that wild animals, particularly buffaloes and lions, have been frequently straying into local villages due to the damaged fence at Save Valley Conservancy.
Conservationists and local leaders have called for urgent repairs to prevent further incursions.
Village head John Mavhiza voiced concern over the growing threats, saying residents remain fearful.
“The lion has killed livestock, and two villagers were seriously injured by buffaloes. ZimParks rangers are tracking the animals, but lasting solutions are needed to end this conflict,” said Mr. Mavhiza.
Buhera Residents Trust director, Mr. Leonard Mabasa, confirmed that one of the victims was admitted to Chapanduka Clinic after being gored by a buffalo.
