Fashion Designer Faces Criticism for Inmate Uniform-Like Clothes

SOUTH AFRICA- The fashion designer and content creator known as Material Don Dada, whose real name is Tshepo Pitso, is facing scrutiny from the Department of Correctional Services (DCS).
This follows concerns that his fashion label, Material Culture, features designs resembling the official uniforms worn by inmates in South African prisons.
The DCS has stated that these designs may violate legal regulations and plans to take action regarding the issue. Singabakho Nxumalo, a spokesman for the department, expressed concern over social media videos showing individuals wearing outfits that look like correctional service uniforms. “This is illegal and punishable by law,” he told Daily Sun.
According to the Correctional Services Act, Act 111 of 1998, it is a crime to wear or use uniforms or insignia that closely resemble those of correctional services.
Offenders can face fines or even up to 18 months in prison. Nxumalo added, “We were not aware of Tshepo Pitso’s work, but he will be traced and informed about the law.”
Material Don Dada, a 33-year-old designer from Johannesburg, launched his clothing line in 2024, building on a movement that began in 2014. The brand is celebrated for its bold and creative designs.
In response to the allegations, Material Don Dada defended his work, denying any intent to copy correctional uniforms. “The colour orange doesn’t belong to Correctional Services. The writing on my designs doesn’t say ‘corrections’ or anything related to it. It’s just in people’s heads,” he stated.
He acknowledged awareness of the law but maintained that his designs do not violate it. “We are not copying them. These types of designs are common, even overseas,” he added.
When asked about the DCS’s intention to reach out, he said, “They can come and ask us. We can explain.”
As the DCS investigates, this case underscores the tension between artistic expression and legal standards. Material Don Dada continues to defend his creative vision while the department remains committed to enforcing the law.
