Ex-Cop Jaison Muvevi Fit for Trial on Multiple Murder Charges

Jaison Muvevi, a former police officer facing five murder charges and three attempted murder charges, is set to appear in court today after being declared mentally fit for trial. In 2023, he was committed to the Chikurubi psychiatric ward following assessments by two psychiatrists who labeled him a mental patient.

Sources indicate that after undergoing various evaluations, Muvevi is now deemed competent to stand trial at the High Court.

Allegedly, Muvevi was involved in a shooting spree in January 2023 that resulted in three fatalities. Reports suggest that he arrived at Chrispen Kanerusine’s shrine accompanied by Shupikai Muvhevhi, dressed in black contrary to the church’s customs. He was reportedly provided with a white cloth to cover himself.

During a sermon by Kanerusine, it is alleged that Muvevi retrieved an FN Browning firearm from his vehicle, which was parked nearby, and shot the preacher in the head. Following this incident, Inspector Maxwell Hove of the Hwedza Police Station organized a response team to investigate the situation.

While attempting to confront Muvevi on the Hwedza-Murambinda Highway, he opened fire, fatally wounding Inspector Hove and injuring Constable Tendai Mugova.

After the shooting, Muvevi drove towards Murambinda Business Centre, where he reportedly shot and killed Munashe Munjani after a brief conversation. On January 14, he also fired shots at Mutare Boys High School, narrowly missing another individual who had denied him food.

Muvevi subsequently fled the country but was later apprehended in Mozambique.
