End of the Hunt: Plumtree Prison Escapee Finally Arrested

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says the nation can “finally breathe a sigh of relief” after notorious fugitive Mike Cabangani Mathe, who escaped from Plumtree Prison in 2025, was arrested on Monday following his deportation from Malawi.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the development in a statement, saying:
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Mike Cabangani Mathe (38) in connection with a case of escaping from lawful custody in Plumtree.”
Mathe, who was serving a 20-year jail term for rape and murder, broke out of Plumtree Prison on 15 November 2025 and fled the country.

His luck ran out on 24 February 2026 when authorities apprehended him upon arrival at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
Commissioner Nyathi said Mathe’s arrest should send a clear warning to fugitives:
“The suspect was apprehended… following his deportation from Malawi. Crime does not pay.”
In the same statement, the ZRP highlighted another major case, welcoming the conviction of former footballers Tumai Matsika (Abbas Amidu) and Kudzai ‘Reuben’ Mhlanga, who were jailed for drug dealing.
“The two appeared in court… and were each sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment,” Nyathi said.
He also applauded citizens for their role in helping fight crime.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police applauds members of the public for their continued cooperation and support,” he said.
Police say Mathe will now face additional charges for his daring escape.
