Initial reports from the KwaZulu-Natal transport department had indicated that nine people had died, but that number was later revised down to eight following further assessment.
Ndabezinhle Sibiya, spokesperson for the provincial Transport MEC, confirmed that emergency services were quick to respond and that the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The department has also begun reaching out to affected families and the church community to offer support.
In a heartfelt statement issued on Sunday, the MEC expressed deep sorrow at the timing and nature of the tragedy.
“On this Mother’s Day, unfortunately the MEC has issued a statement indicating that this morning around 06h47 he received a report from our highly dedicated team from Road Traffic Inspectorate informing him about a horrific accident that claimed the lives of eight people, mostly mothers,” said Sibiya.
The MEC further emphasized the emotional weight of the incident: “Losing a mother is a deeply painful experience that marks the radical change of the family’s life and involves a wide range of sad emotions.”
