Durban man arrested for highjacking off-duty Cops, firearms recovered

DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA – A 34-year-old Durban man was arrested on Thursday for allegedly hijacking two off-duty police officers and stealing their service firearms.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident.

“The two police officers from Greenwood Park police station were hijacked by an armed suspect at Courtown Crescent in Avoca Hills.”

Colonel Robert Netshiunda noted that a successful operation resulted in the arrest of a hijacking suspect.

“I commend the teamwork and swift response of our officers from Greenwood Park, Durban North and Newlands along with private security officials whose diligent follow-up on leads culminated in the apprehension of the suspect in Newton A, Inanda.”

“The suspect was found with two firearms and 30 rounds of ammunition stolen from the officers.”

“A thorough search of the premises yielded two additional unlicensed firearms and 12 rounds of ammunition. Notably, the hijacked vehicle was also successfully recovered,” he said.

The suspect will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court next Monday.
