Driver Nabbed for Coffin Drug Smuggling

BEITBRIDGE – A brazen attempt to smuggle drugs into Zimbabwe was foiled on Sunday morning when border officials intercepted a Quantum vehicle at the Beitbridge border post.

The vehicle, travelling from South Africa, was found to have a hidden compartment beneath its trailer, containing an undisclosed quantity of drugs.

According to officials, the driver presented documentation claiming to transport a deceased individual for burial in Zimbabwe. However, vigilant border officials became suspicious and conducted a thorough inspection, revealing the hidden drugs.

A senior border official, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the driver’s attempt to exploit the sensitivity surrounding funeral transport was a clear indication of the lengths to which smugglers will go to circumvent the law.

“The driver’s actions were a blatant attempt to deceive our officials. We will continue to work tirelessly to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety of our communities,”said the official.

The driver has been detained and is expected to face charges related to drug trafficking and attempting to deceive border authorities. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact type and quantity of the drugs.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by border officials in combating sophisticated smuggling operations.

Beitbridge, one of Africa’s busiest inland ports, has long been a hotspot for illegal activities, including drug trafficking, human smuggling and the illegal movement of goods.

Authorities have commended the vigilance of the officers involved and reiterated their commitment to strengthening border security. “We remain steadfast in our efforts to protect our borders and ensure the safety of our communities,” the official added.

The incident serves as a warning to smugglers and underscores the commitment of border officials to upholding the law.
